Secure Server Overview

Included in our Basic and Standard Hosting Packages is a Secure Socket Layer feature (SSL) to accept secure data. URLs for web page files utilizing a SSL start with the prefix "https://" where the "s" implies that the information is transferred in secure mode, indicated by a key or a lock in the browser status window.

Secure URL example: If you had an order form titled orderform.html, you would store it in a subdirectory located within the httpdocs directory (titled "secure_orders" in this example). The full url would look like this: https://www.yourdomain.com/secure_orders/orderform.html.

However, on our servers standard form processing is done by a perl FormMail CGI script. This FormMail script returns customer's form submission to you via email, which is fine for most normal form processing...but is NOT secure. If you are collecting sensitive data from your forms (credit card numbers, social security numbers, etc.), you need a Secure Ordering System CGI script software that instead writes the submitted form results to a passworded, secure directory on our servers for your retrieval.

We do offer such script software in the optional Connected Order System (COSorder), which can be installed for an additional $350 one-time charge.

The Optional Connected Order System
The COS ordering system features:

  • Secure data handling, including charge numbers for credit cards. System serially-numbers orders for easy tracking.
  • Email confirmation to customer when order is placed.
  • Email notification to you when new orders are placed.
  • Ability to view, print, save, and remove serially-numbered orders from the server in a secure mode.

Here's a sample of what the email confirmation message to the customer looks like:

**********************************************************

To: LAWMON123@HOTMAIL.COM
From: sales@flyfishing-gifts.com
Subject: Your Order

Thank you for your Order.
Order Number 2108
Received (mm/dd/yy hh:mm): 01/24/08, 16:03

SUBJECT: Guidebook Order
green river guidebook: $19.95
credit+card: visa
your name: MADISON A LAWMON
company name: N/A
address: 8889 S. 2750 W.
city: WEST JORDAN
state: UT
zip: 84088
country: USA
daytime: 801-560-4242
email: LAWMON123@HOTMAIL.COM

***********************************************************

The email you receive looks just like this, accept the Subject is: "New Order", and the next line instead reads "You have a received a New Order". The credit card number doesn't appear on the email as it is not secure; it is stored on the server.

You can retrieve the order from a passworded, secure page via your browser, and manually process the order through your credit card terminal. If you need a merchant credit card account, a terminal or real-time processing, see our Options Available links at right.
